American Bison
The American Bison was a major resource for the traditional way of life for Native Americans and First Nations people. They understood that Nature exists in a certain balance, and that nothing must be over harvested so as to maintain a sustainable ecosystem.
Due to commercial hunting and slaughter by colonizing forces, the American Bison was intentionally and nearly put to extinction. In the late 1700’s there was an estimated 60 million American Bison. By 1889, the population was culled to less than 1,000.
Through multiple reintroductions, the species now freely roams wild in several regions in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
